About Spout Spring Estates

Spout Spring Estates

Living on the lake in west Knoxville, longing for a peaceful setting for retirement from their mechanical engineering careers, Chuck and Alice Belt purchased a family-owned 120 acre cattle farm located in Grainger County. Chuck's internet research and love for good wine led to the development of Spout Spring Estates Vineyard established in 2004. The vineyard has mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. In 2007, Riesling was also planted.

2006: Aproximately 28,000 pounds of Cabernet Sauvignon were hand picked and sold to a local winery. The Brix of this fruit was 19 and the pH was within the acceptable levels.

2007: Due to a late frost, 11,500 pounds of Cabernet Sauvignon were hand picked  with a Brix of 23.2.

2008:  There should be 50,000 pounds of Cabernet Sauvignon  harvested this year!

Harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon

All canopy management and harvesting is completed by hand. Grapes are delivered to the winery within 24-48 hours of harvest.

Scott Henry trellis system

Scott Henry Trellis was the system chosen to use.

Tunnel sprayer

Being environmentally conscious, a recirculation tunnel sprayer was purchased. It is made in Germany and was delivered by Hans and Wolfgang from Canada.  Integrated pest management is also practiced.

Log home

In the spring of 2007, Chuck and Alice moved into their new log home overlooking the vineyard. The dedicated crushing and pressing area is also located here.
